About Stand:

Stand is a technology-driven insurance company transforming how homeowners assess, mitigate, and insure against climate risks. We leverage advanced modeling, proactive mitigation strategies, and science-backed assessments to provide coverage in catastrophe-exposed markets where traditional insurers hesitate.

How to apply: Interested applicants can email Dan (dankahn@standinsurance.com) sharing their resume and a short blurb about their interest in the position.

The Role:

We are hiring a Mitigation Specialist to sit at the intersection of underwriting, construction, and customer success. This role is core to how we deliver differentiated value in the market—by turning complex mitigation science into action, clarity, and ultimately bound policies.

This role is externally-facing and commercial, helping brokers, homeowners, and contractors understand what it takes to get coverage, why it matters, and how to execute effectively. You will guide prospects and partners through our mitigation requirements, own customer-facing materials and playbooks, and bring structure to the “gray area” decisions that currently slow us down.

Responsibilities:

Customer & Broker Enablement

  • Working with the customer to complete the resiliency plan, coordinating mitigation renovations end-to-end

  • Serve as a key contact for brokers, vendors, contractors, and customers navigating mitigation requirements

  • Help articulate the business value of home hardening and defensible space in a commercially driven manner

  • Lead "gray area" decisions by formalizing edge cases into structured, repeatable exceptions

  • Build and maintain playbooks, checklists, and decision guides that support conversion and clarity

Guideline Implementation Ownership

  • Translate Applied Science insights and risk requirements into customer-facing mitigation action plans, meeting building code and standard construction rigor

  • Implement and explain lists like banned vegetation or mandatory upgrades by region or home type for the customer

  • Partner with Applied Science team to draft update language

  • Train underwriting and risk teams on requirement updates and alterations, ensuring consistent application across the funnel

Market Feedback & Process Improvement

  • Aggregate broker and customer feedback to improve guidelines and communications

  • Proactively identify gaps in our current processes and propose scalable solutions

  • Partner with Product, Applied Science, and Actuarial to maintain a feedback loop that balances growth and risk

Ideal Background:

We’re looking for someone who understands the world of construction, is not afraid to design and digest complex technical systems, has a deep understanding of building best practices, and can interpret actuarial risk constraints for risk —but can also communicate it in plain English and motivate action.

Great candidates might come from:

  • General contracting or construction management, with a strong communication style

  • Insurance underwriting or risk engineering, with a hands-on bias and customer focus

  • Civil, fire protection, or mechanical engineering, with experience translating complex topics into decisions

Metrics You'll Move:

  • [GROWTH] Reduce customer and broker touchpoints to streamline decision-making

  • [GROWTH] Increase quote-to-bind conversion by clarifying mitigation paths and planning mitigation campaigns for customers

  • [RISK] Improve adherence to mitigations without slowing down the funnel

  • [RISK] Leverage Applied Science insights to increase portfolio resiliency over time

  • [EFFICIENCY] Reduce underwriting reliance on Applied Science for common mitigation questions
